What Is a Drip Campaign? A Plain-English Guide With Real Examples
A drip campaign is a series of automated emails sent over time based on subscriber behavior. Here's how they work, when to use them, and how to build your first one.
A drip campaign is a series of pre-written emails that go out automatically over time — either on a schedule or triggered by subscriber actions. The name comes from "drip irrigation": delivering the right amount of information steadily, rather than all at once.
If you've ever signed up for a newsletter and received a welcome email, then another email two days later, then a follow-up a week after that — you've been through a drip campaign. They run quietly in the background, nurturing subscribers from curious to engaged to ready-to-buy, without anyone manually hitting "send."
The Difference Between a Drip Campaign and a Broadcast Email
Most marketing emails fall into two categories:
Broadcast emails are sent once to a list. Your monthly newsletter, a promotional announcement, a product launch email — all sent at a specific moment to everyone on the list (or a segment of it). They're timely and reactive to what's happening in your business.
Drip campaigns are triggered by subscriber behavior, not by your calendar. When someone joins your list, they enter a drip. When someone buys a product, a different drip starts. The email sequence plays out relative to when the subscriber joined, not when you sent it.
Most effective email marketing programs use both. Broadcast emails keep your audience connected to your current activity. Drip campaigns work in the background, delivering the right message at the right moment to each subscriber based on where they are in their relationship with you.
Four Common Types of Drip Campaigns
1. Welcome Drip
Triggered by: New subscriber joining your list
Purpose: Introduce your brand, deliver value, build trust, and gently introduce your offer
Typical length: 3–5 emails over 7–10 days
This is the most important drip campaign you'll build. Welcome emails have the highest open rates of any marketing email — up to 60% — because new subscribers are actively engaged and curious. A welcome drip takes advantage of this window to do more than a single email can.
Example sequence:
- Email 1 (immediate): Welcome + deliver lead magnet
- Email 2 (Day 3): Your most useful piece of content
- Email 3 (Day 7): Your story + introduce your product/service
- Email 4 (Day 10): Social proof + soft CTA
2. Nurture Drip
Triggered by: Signing up for a specific lead magnet or demonstrating interest in a particular topic
Purpose: Educate subscribers over time, building the knowledge and trust required to convert on a higher-ticket offer
Typical length: 5–10 emails over 2–4 weeks
Nurture drips work well for coaching, consulting, software, and anything that requires more education before purchase. Instead of pitching cold, you warm subscribers up with useful content that directly addresses their questions and objections.
Example sequence for a business coach:
- Email 1: "The mindset shift that makes everything else easier"
- Email 2: "The three mistakes I see new entrepreneurs make"
- Email 3: "A case study: how [client] went from [A] to [B]"
- Email 4: "The questions you should be asking (and aren't)"
- Email 5: "When you're ready to go faster, here's how we can work together"
3. Onboarding Drip
Triggered by: Customer completing a purchase or signing up for a free trial
Purpose: Help new customers get value from what they bought as quickly as possible
Typical length: 4–7 emails over the first 2–3 weeks
This is critical for software and subscription products, where early engagement predicts long-term retention. But it applies to any purchase — a course that walks students through the early modules, a service that explains what to expect in the first week, a physical product with usage tips.
Example sequence for a productivity app:
- Email 1 (immediate): Welcome + account setup guide
- Email 2 (Day 2): How to complete the most important first action
- Email 3 (Day 5): The feature most users miss (and why it matters)
- Email 4 (Day 10): "How's it going?" check-in with offer to help
- Email 5 (Day 21): Power user tip + community/support resources
4. Re-Engagement Drip
Triggered by: Subscriber who hasn't opened an email in 90+ days
Purpose: Win back inactive subscribers — or cleanly remove them
Typical length: 2–3 emails over 2 weeks
Example sequence:
- Email 1: "Still want to hear from us?" — genuine check-in, reminder of value
- Email 2 (Day 7): "Last chance to stay subscribed" — urgency, but honest
- Email 3 (Day 14): Automated removal if no engagement — keeps list clean
How a Drip Campaign Flows
Here's what a simple welcome drip looks like at the technical level:
- Subscriber enters their email address on your subscribe page
- Trigger fires: "New subscriber added"
- Email 1 sends immediately
- System waits 3 days
- If subscriber hasn't unsubscribed: Email 2 sends
- System waits 4 more days
- If subscriber hasn't unsubscribed: Email 3 sends
- Subscriber exits the drip and enters your regular broadcast list
More sophisticated drips add conditional branches:
- If subscriber opened Email 2 → send Email 3A (more advanced content)
- If subscriber didn't open Email 2 → send Email 3B (re-engagement with simplified hook)
This branching is powerful but adds complexity. Start with a linear sequence and add branches once you have enough data to make the branch decisions confidently.
Writing a Drip Campaign: The Practical Checklist
Before you build:
- [ ] Define the trigger. What starts this drip? Be specific.
- [ ] Define the goal. What do you want subscribers to do by the end of the sequence?
- [ ] Map the sequence on paper. How many emails? What's the one thing each email does?
- [ ] Write the emails. All of them, before you build anything in your platform. This ensures voice consistency.
- [ ] Set delays. How long between each email?
- [ ] Define exit conditions. What removes someone from the drip early? (Unsubscribe, purchase, etc.)
After you build:
- [ ] Test with a real email address. Subscribe yourself and go through the whole sequence.
- [ ] Check mobile formatting. Most subscribers will read on phones.
- [ ] Activate. Start the sequence. Monitor performance weekly for the first month.
Measuring Drip Campaign Performance
The most useful metrics for drip campaigns:
Open rate per email: Healthy sequences show a gradual decline — Email 1 gets the most opens, later emails fewer. A sudden drop on a specific email signals a subject line or content problem.
Click rate per email: Measures engagement with each email's content and CTA.
Exit rate per email: What percentage of subscribers unsubscribe at each step? Spikes reveal problem emails.
End-of-sequence conversion rate: For nurture and sales sequences, what percentage of subscribers who complete the sequence take the desired action (purchase, book a call, etc.)?
Review these metrics quarterly. Small improvements to subject lines and CTAs compound significantly over time — a drip campaign that runs for two years will reach thousands of subscribers.
Getting Started With Your First Drip
The welcome drip is the right starting point. It's universally applicable, immediately valuable, and not difficult to build.
Today: Write three emails. Email 1 (welcome + deliver), Email 2 (best value), Email 3 (soft introduction to your offer). Keep each one under 400 words.
This week: Build the sequence in your email platform, set delays (immediate, 3 days, 7 days), test it with your own email address, activate.
Next month: Review performance. Adjust one subject line. Add a fourth email if the sequence is working well.
